In 2017, the Adopt a Potter Charitable Trust set up Clay College Stoke, a unique independent school teaching ceramics in Stoke on Trent. Our aim in setting up the college was to further safeguard the future of studio pottery in the UK by providing a forum for our world-renowned, but aging Master Potters to pass on their skills and practical wisdom. The college opened its doors on 11th September 2017, to 13 full-time students. Our students are taught all aspects of design, hand-building, decoration, throwing, glazing, kiln building and firing, augmented by modules focusing on business, sales and marketing. Our course is designed to create self-sufficient potters and our graduates will be uniquely qualified to start their careers with a sound practical, material, design and business knowledge which is otherwise not available from the current training opportunities in the UK. In addition, we run evening classes and weekend masterclasses, taught by visiting Master Potters. The Clay College Gallery opened in early November 2017, with an exhibition of work by leading slipware potters. The gallery showcases the work of both students and visiting Master Potters.
